While overseas, he was impressed by the relative freedom he had as a man of color, compared to what he had experienced in the United States. At the time, the former country was just entering the early stages of the Irish Potato Famine, or the Great Hunger. Later that same year, Douglass would travel to Ireland and Great Britain. He also noted, “Thus is slavery the enemy of both the slave and the slaveholder.” Frederick Douglass in Ireland and Great Britain In it Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he wrote: “From my earliest recollection, I date the entertainment of a deep conviction that slavery would not always be able to hold me within its foul embrace and in the darkest hours of my career in slavery, this living word of faith and spirit of hope departed not from me, but remained like ministering angels to cheer me through the gloom.” (He also authored My Bondage and My Freedom and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass). Two years later, Douglass published the first and most famous of his autobiographies, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. 'Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass' Brown was caught and hanged for masterminding the attack, offering the following prophetic words as his final statement: “I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.” military arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, part of his attempt to establish a stronghold of formerly enslaved people in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. In 1858, radical abolitionist John Brown stayed with Frederick Douglass in Rochester, New York, as he planned his raid on the U.S. The injuries never fully healed, and he never regained full use of his hand. In one particularly brutal attack, in Pendleton, Indiana, Douglass’ hand was broken. Douglass was physically assaulted several times during the tour by those opposed to the abolitionist movement. It was Garrison who encouraged Douglass to become a speaker and leader in the abolitionist movement.īy 1843, Douglass had become part of the American Anti-Slavery Society’s “Hundred Conventions” project, a six-month tour through the United States. The two men eventually met when both were asked to speak at an abolitionist meeting, during which Douglass shared his story of slavery and escape. During these meetings, he was exposed to the writings of abolitionist and journalist William Lloyd Garrison. In New Bedford, Douglass began attending meetings of the abolitionist movement. From Slavery to Abolitionist LeaderĪfter their marriage, the young couple moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where they met Nathan and Mary Johnson, a married couple who were born “free persons of color.” It was the Johnsons who inspired the couple to take the surname Douglass, after the character in the Sir Walter Scott poem, “The Lady of the Lake.” She joined him, and the two were married in September 1838. Once settled in New York, he sent for Anna Murray, a free Black woman from Baltimore he met while in captivity with the Aulds. From there he traveled through Delaware, another slave state, before arriving in New York and the safe house of abolitionist David Ruggles. Roughly 16 at this time, Douglass was regularly whipped by Covey.Īfter several failed attempts at escape, Douglass finally left Covey’s farm in 1838, first boarding a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland. By the time he was hired out to work under William Freeland, he was teaching other enslaved people to read using the Bible.Īs word spread of his efforts to educate fellow enslaved people, Thomas Auld took him back and transferred him to Edward Covey, a farmer who was known for his brutal treatment of the enslaved people in his charge. With that foundation, Douglass then taught himself to read and write. Douglass credits Hugh’s wife Sophia with first teaching him the alphabet. However, at the age of six, he was moved away from her to live and work on the Wye House plantation in Maryland.įrom there, Douglass was “given” to Lucretia Auld, whose husband, Thomas, sent him to work with his brother Hugh in Baltimore. His full name at birth was “Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.”Īfter he was separated from his mother as an infant, Douglass lived for a time with his maternal grandmother, Betty Bailey. He was actually born Frederick Bailey (his mother’s name), and took the name Douglass only after he escaped. His mother was an enslaved Black women and his father was white and of European descent. Douglass himself was never sure of his exact birth date. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in or around 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland.

Given the clear intention of targeting personal customers, it’s a shame that RoboForm has not yet disclosed any plans to add passkey compatibility. For example, there’s no VPN service so you’ll either have to pay extra for one of those or go for a password manager that has one. Other companies tend to bundle in some additional functionalities, or they offer more services as a company, which makes RoboForm look a little bit expensive in comparison. It’s worth mentioning that, like some of its rivals, this is purely a password manager. These advanced controls are one of the reasons RoboForm is one of our favorite password management solutions for businesses. Users can make loads of customizations to security protocols and account settings when using the desktop or mobile apps. You can also enable automatic syncing.Īnother strength of RoboForm is the high degree of account control. Although we had to conduct a manual sync, it took less than three seconds for data uploaded on the mobile app to appear on our desktop device. We tested the RoboForm app on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, and were impressed by the speed of syncing. While it lacks some of the polish that other desktop clients have, it’s by no means bad and actually looks a lot better than some other options. The RoboForm app isn’t the most glamorous password manager application, but it performs strongly and it’s easy to navigate its range of features. It’s also possible for RoboForm to grant emergency access to other users in case anything bad happens to an employee. This feature enables users to securely share encrypted passwords or credentials with other RoboForm users within your organization – ideal if you want to reduce the risk of sensitive information being exposed outside of your company. Password sharing is another powerful feature of RoboForm. This is ideal for businesses that want to enable seamless password management for their organization, and it’s even more appealing to SMBs and sole traders who want to balance work and life without having to manage two subscriptions. For example, businesses can easily create separate folders for work-related passwords and personal passwords. We also love RoboForm’s integration of folders, enabling users to organize passwords in whatever way is most useful to them. As of January 2023, the company also added the much-anticipated 2FA generator into the experience so there’s no need for users to rely on third-party apps to generate codes. It can also auto-fill data fields for time savings on sites that need long web forms completed. RoboForm includes features such as a password generator for creating strong and unique passwords of sufficient length and complexity, one-click login, cross-platform password syncing, and offline access. (Image credit: Roboform) Roboform: Interface and performance The app and its data are protected by lots of authentication methods – including PIN numbers, master passwords, or biometrics. Once downloaded, the app is easy to get up and running, but users must create an account before accessing any of the app’s features. Both apps are highly rated on their respective stores, with the iOS app getting 4.7 out of 5 stars, and the Android version almost as high at 4.5 out of 5 stars. Users can easily access the applications via their device’s app store or the RoboForm website. Web extensions for all major browsers platforms also mean you can integrate RoboForm right into your web experience, so whether you’re using Chrome, Edge, Firefox, you will be covered. In addition to applications for macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android, RoboForm also offers software options for Linux users. RoboForm offers various software options, meaning business leaders can ensure compatibility across their organization. It costs $23.88 / £20 / AUD$35 annually, or $47.75 / £45 / AUD$80 per year if you want those same features for up to five users on the Family plan. The Everywhere plan adds web access, which the free tier does without, as well as access on all devices, local access, password sharing, and better support. 2002: Unreal Championship was one of the first games on Xbox Live.Multiplayer shooter, America’s Army was the first release 2002: Launched with enhanced rendering, cinematic editing, and integrated support for 3D libraries.1999: 16 external projects were using the technology.1998: Integrated UnrealEd editor, innovative graphics, colors, and textures.1995: Tim Seveeny began its development. The History of Unreal Engine So Far Unreal Engine First generation Whether you’re new to game development or looking to expand your skills to include Unreal, check out these courses to learn how to use Unreal Engine. It’s been used for years in the world of cinema to convey emotion and drive a message, while simultaneously adding a whimsical, dramatic, and impactful moment to a movie. A montage is a powerful storytelling tool. Of the six, only Barcelona adopted the Hippodamian grid in 1859 for its vast expansion, and Venice, without a classic grid, is the preeminent pedestrian haven, yet neither city matches the urbanist's praise for Portland. Urbanists and romanticists have expressed equally strong sentiments about Paris, London, Barcelona, Curitiba, Amsterdam and Venice. But strong feelings such as these may be entangled between actual attributes and personal associations, hard to unravel for practical purposes, as other cities also share such emotional investment, at times. Recently, a local movement to rename the city in order to project these strong emotions was set in motion. Constantly on the outlook for an ideal urban pattern, planners list Portland as a favorite and some boast "I love that city!" with emotion. Personal testimonies of visiting planners who express adulation for Portland add a second indirect layer of attention. Inevitably, attributes of the city - such as its grid - are seen by affiliation as paradigmatic. Indirectly, because the City of Portland has taken many first-ever, brave and decisive measures to manage growth, and cities and planners hold it up as a model of civic vision. Portland's street grid pattern has attracted attention indirectly and directly. In articles, project brochures and city planning reports "the grid" stands alone the other contestant, mid-to-late 1900s suburban networks, has been wholly discredited in mainstream planning. In this praise, it is not simply the grid in general, but the small blocks in particular that impart success. We read again that "Portland owes much of its success to its tiny blocks that create an incredibly porous network of streets, each of which can be quite small as a result" ( Jeff Speck, 2005). Portland's network offers an instructive example for discussing grids because of the grid's nature (an unadulterated Hippodamian grid and the densest of all American city grids (Fig 2, MS Earth), its size and the City's planning celebrity status. The grid gets credit for city success, at least by inference, but is this credit warranted? After all, the vast majority of our successful towns and cities, from Cambridge to Portland, were laid out this way." (Duany). The centre lines of streets intersect at 260 foot intervals.įor example, in 1992 we read that "Streets ought to be laid out largely in straight segments, as they were until the 1940s. Portland's (Hippodamian) Grid overlaid on a Virtual Earth bird's eye view of Pearl District. The "grid" as a network concept has been widely accepted and is now regarded as a superior geometry for laying out greenfield and infill sites.įigure 2. Clarity about its attributes may also open the way for its regeneration.Ĭurrent planning literature brims with references to "the grid" in juxtaposition with curvilinear and dendrite conventional suburban layouts. It deserves detailed attention if only to clarify this schism and enable site plan designers to know when and why they could apply 'the Grid'. This disparity between theory and practice simultaneously confuses the practitioner and frustrates the theoretician. This alleged lack of respect seems at odds with most planning literature, which extols its virtues and mirrors prevalent New Urbanist practice. From Miletus (473 BC) to Barcelona (1859) and to Portland (1867), the grid has resurfaced in many alternative sizes of square blocks and in variations of elongated rectangles (NY 1811). A session in the recent 2009 New Partners for Smart Growth conference focused on 'The Beautiful American Grid - the Embodiment of Smart Growth,' which lamented the fact that the grid 'gets no respect'.įigure 1. In the 4000-year history of the grid, American incarnations are relatively new, appearing first about 300 years ago, frequently as a simple, orthogonal and often square (such as Portland's) 'Hippodamian' grid, named after the planner of Miletus around 473 BC (Fig 1). But is Portland's grid worthy of adulation? Perhaps not, say Fanis Grammenos and Douglas Pollard of Urban Pattern Associates. For American planners, Portland, OR is held up as a shining example of urban planning, and credit is given to its compact grid. Moving on to what we actually want, we need to download the binaries for the old version of Max Payne 3 from HERE: Helium is often used as a mixture with argon to support high heat requirements during welding and enhance the penetration depth for stainless steel pipes. However, it is expensive when compared with argon. Helium: Helium is a good choice for purging when welding pipes with greater thickness and at high temperatures. The nitrogen-argon mix can also be used as a purge gas to enhance the weld’s corrosion resistance. Nitrogen is also a more economical choice compared to argon. When used with TIG welding for austenitic stainless steel, nitrogen can stabilize the delta-ferrite ratio in the weld pool to improve the tensile strength and pitting resistance in the joint. Although undesirable for use with most stainless steels, nitrogen has been used in place of argon to purge some stainless steel types. Nitrogen: Nitrogen is a reactive gas that when combined with heat can enhance the properties of the joint and prevent weld oxidation. Due to its non-reactive nature, it is suitable for high-temperature welding applications. Most standard argon used for industrial welding is 99.99% pure, but 100% pure argon can be used for high-purity applications. Its inert nature prevents oxidation and helps preserve the corrosion-resistant property of the metal while providing a clean and smooth finish. It provides the necessary blanket when welding stainless steel pipes to prevent contamination. Below, we explore each of these gases in more detail.Īrgon: Argon is the most commonly preferred purging gas by welders when using a TIG or manual welding method. Types of Purge Gases Suitable for Stainless SteelĪ common question welders face is: “What gas is best to purge stainless steel pipe during welding?” Popular options include argon, helium, and nitrogen. For stainless steel pipes used across food processing, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, nuclear, and many other industries, purging allows for welds that meet both strength and sanitary requirements. The use of inert gas prevents the chemical interaction with the molten puddle to help derive the desired weld attributes. This is observable as the granulation on the backside of the weld and can be the source of cracks, contamination, and corrosion.Ĭonsequently, purging is an important preventive measure against oxidation and contamination on the backside of the weld. However, when welding stainless steel pipes, chromium content can oxidize along the back of the weld and create a “sugaring” effect. This general mechanism would also work for metals like carbon steel or aluminum. Argon is often used as the shielding gas to protect stainless steel pipes from the external environment during welding. Welders prefer a TIG welding process for stainless steel to create strong, corrosion-resistant joints. Stainless Steel and Weld Defects From Poor Welding In this article, we will discuss these purging gases and determine the best gas for purging stainless steel during welding. Given the different types of stainless steels, inert gases like nitrogen or helium may also be options. In the case of stainless steel, however, the need for purging gas may vary. Argon, the most notable purging gas, can be effectively used with steel, aluminum, or copper alloys. When TIG welding, purging prevents issues like pitting, cracking, and splatter from arising. If you are performing a welding operation, you’re familiar with the term “ purging,” which is simply the method of extracting oxygen from the welding scene to avoid the risk of oxidation.
